My Child Grinds Their Teeth
Grinding and clenching, also known as Bruxism, is common with both children and adults. But did you know that it’s predicted that for every 10 children approximately 2-3 of them grind or clench!! So if your kid is… don’t stress, there are probably other kids in their class who also have adopted the habit! But you still should follow it up.
Thankfully, the key thing to remember with bruxism in children is that, like a lot of things with kids, they will grow out of it. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the necessary precautions, monitor your child's habit and make sure they aren’t doing any permanent damage to their adult teeth - those things won’t grow back!
For many children, this is a phase and they will grind and clench in times of stress and anxiety, similar to us adults. Luckily for kids their teeth aren’t permanent and have a new set coming however, it’s still a good idea to visit a doctor for advice.
A doctor or specialist will be able to assess the cause, the damage and determine the best way to treat it.
Why we don’t recommend children use The Knight Guard products
One common question we get asked by parents is if our guards are suitable for children. Whilst a treatment option for children who grind can often be to wear a protective night guard, we still don’t think it’s safe to order your child one without the assistance of a doctor, dentist or specialist. The risk with purchasing a night guard without the advice and monitoring of treatment is that it’s possible the guard will affect your child's natural growth. Also, if there are any further underlying reasons that your child is grinding it’s important you get to the route of the issue - prevention is better than protection.
